The RoHS directive took effect on July 1st 2006. RoHS is often referred to as the lead-free directive, but it restricts the use of the following six substances:
- Protect human health and the environment
- Complement the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive (2002/96/EC)
- Lead (Pb) Solders, termination coatings, paints, pigment, PVC stabilizer, batteries
- Mercury (Hg) Fluorescent lamps, batteries, sensors, relays
- Cadmium (Cd) Coatings, solders, semiconductors, contacts, PVC stabilizer, pigments
- Hexavalent chromium (chromium xxx or Cr6+) Coatings to prevent corrosion (on zinc,aluminum or in paints)
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) Flame retardant in certain plastics (no longer produced)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) Flame retardant in certain plastics
Note that batteries are not included within the scope of RoHS, therefore NiCd, Lead-acid and Mercury batteries are permitted despite the use of restricted substances.It does not apply to fixed industrial plant and tools.
